Dear Sharra, What is happening in Florida should disturb everyone.
The Florida Secretary of State chose to give the Florida Democratic Party the right to unilaterally decide who to put on the Florida primary ballot to represent Democrats. Instead of honoring the fact that others are running in the primary as well, the party voted to include only Joseph Biden! This is part of a larger concerted effort by the Democratic Party to clinch the nomination for the President without any opposition. This is an authoritarian, not a democratic way of doing things, and we will do everything possible to oppose it. We feel the Florida statute giving the FDP such power is a violation of our Constitutional rights granted in the 14th Amendment. And the party, while a political committee and not a governmental agency, is still performing a quasi-governmental function and has a responsibility to the public good.
Here we are working so hard to get on the ballots, polling at double digits — then Florida comes along to say it doesn't matter what we do. While a vast majority of Democratic voters have made clear they're interested in a choice of candidates, party leaders think they know better and are entitled to make the decision by themselves. How ironic that the party that claims to be the champion of democracy is trying to save democracy by suppressing it.

And none of should be happening in the United States of America. The action of the Florida State Democrats is terrible for the party and terrible for our democracy. The role of a political party is to facilitate democracy, not thwart it.
I will keep you updated on how the process unfolds. We will be taking legal action to protect the right of every Floridian to vote their conscience.
All this is why so many people are turned off to politics; what should be an exciting and inspiring process is a tawdry one. But what's at stake is something so important, that letting go doesn't feel like an option. Particularly with so many people telling me with tears in their eyes that they've never even wanted to vote before but now they're so happy to do so, it doesn't feel like we're supposed to give up. It feels like we're supposed to dig in.
I hope you'll dig in with me. We need your financial support to make this possible — and together we can do this. |
P.S. [Watch] Yesterday we held a joint Press Event with Cenk Uygur regarding Florida. You can catch up here. |
