Dear Sharra, We're living at a time of all-systems breakdown, and this requires an all-systems approach to healing. In order to break the pattern of decline now evidenced in almost every corner of society, we must bring to bear on the process something more than traditional modes of problem-solving. We must bring a deeper analysis of what really ails us, and a deeper personal commitment to be part of the solution. |
Americans have an instinctive understanding that this country matters, and I think people grieve at the ways we've strayed collectively from our most enlightened ideals. But we can change this. We are a people who were born to do great things, and when such a call does not exist we become like wilted plants. The nourishment we need today is not that we should be asked to do less, but that we should be asked to do more. It's time to rise to the occasion in our time, as other generations have done in theirs. There is a spirit among us of a new world that's struggling to be born, and people want desperately to see that happen. We are creating among ourselves new conversations, new solutions, and a new vision of what is possible not only in America but in the world.
This is bigger than a political horse race, and speaking to audiences where I am still on the primary ballot creates a depth of possibility that wouldn't otherwise exist. Last night I spoke in Queens, NY; today I'm speaking in New Haven, CT; and over the next two days I'll be speaking in Ossining, NY and in Greenwich Village. |
There is energy rumbling underneath the surface in America today - most everyone can feel it - and it's going to blow in one direction or the other. We're either going to generate "a new birth of freedom" to use Lincoln's words, or events will move us in the direction of authoritarianism and chaos. Remaining on the trail, I'm doing everything in my power to help inspire the commitment to greater democracy and love. Thank you deeply for your support in doing so. |
