One year on, we are just beginning to feel the weight of the far-reaching consequences of the Dobbs ruling.
Thanks to newly enacted abortion bans, today a pregnant woman in Miami would have to travel nearly 1,000 miles across multiple state lines to reach a state where abortion access is still fully protected under state law.
Rural hospitals in some states have begun shuttering OB-GYN services to avoid running into legal conflict with extreme bans.
Healthcare providers in states that have banned all or most abortions now face criminal penalties with severe fines and jail time if they perform an abortion, even if it is their professional medical opinion that the abortion is necessary but it fails to meet the far right's legal definition of life-threatening.
As a result, 64% of OB-GYNs nationwide believe that the Dobbs decision has worsened maternal mortality rates in this country. The United States already had the highest maternal mortality rate of any advanced democracy before we lost Roe.
This is a national health emergency, and our federal government should respond accordingly. Both Congress and the president should be moving to restore abortion rights immediately. Instead? Congressional Republicans are pushing a national abortion ban.
The Williamson Administration will protect reproductive rights by:
|
- Appointing federal judges and Supreme Court judges who acknowledge Roe v. Wade as the law of the land, and support the Constitutional right to Privacy
- Codify Roe v. Wade into a federal law
- Expand and Restore Funding for Planned Parenthood, and other local healthcare clinics that provide abortion and other services
- Create a federal program that provides contraception resources, especially for low-income communities
- Repeal the Hyde and Helms Amendments
- Ban Targeted Restrictions on Abortion Providers (TRAP) Laws
- Refuse Title X funding for "crisis pregnancy centers"
- Emphasize reproductive justice and end the Black Maternal Mortality Crisis
- Expand funding for sexual education in K-12 and in Higher Education
- Work to Combat the "Post-Birth Abortion" Myth
- Vigorously oppose federal and state legislation designed to shame, harass, punish, or further restrict women from exercising their constitutional right to choose
