Dear Sharra, As I made clear in my speech a couple of days ago, with all respect and compassion I call for the President to step down as our nominee. It's imperative, in order to win in November, that we let someone else now run with the baton.
Obviously I believe that that someone else should be me. Not because I personally carry some superior power, because no one does. It's because the agenda I have articulated for the last year and a half is the one with enough excitement and heft to beat Donald Trump. It supports the working people of the United States as fiercely and powerfully as Trump's agenda supports the corporate and authoritarian takeover of the United States. |
The last thing we need for president is someone who thinks climate change is a hoax. The last thing we need is someone who thinks big tax cuts for the very richest among us is the way to go – or letting corporations control the agencies of government – or shooting protestors in the foot if they're too rowdy (which he seriously suggested to his Secretary of Defense) – or that a fake electors scheme is an "official act" and therefore should come with immunity from criminal prosecution. Such things are not a protection of our democracy; they are a menace to our democracy. Donald Trump's man-of-the-people routine turns quickly into nothingness when looked at in light of the politics he actually stands for. Yet while the former president offers nothing but false hope to the people of the United States, the problem with the Democratic Party is that we offer too little hope whatsoever. "We'll finish the job" will not inspire enough people to vote for us. Nor will "We get things done." Nor will "We're not Donald Trump and that should be enough of a reason." Nor will "We'll codify Roe" when Democrats should have done that years ago. What will inspire enough people to vote for us is a message of clear unequivocal support for fundamental improvement in their everyday lives.
Economic indicators are not always human indicators. To tell people who can't afford to feed their family a decent meal for dinner every night that the economy is doing well, is ludicrous. We will not get people to vote for us by invalidating their experience; we will inspire voters – including a lot of new voters – by demonstrating that we understand the economic anxiety the majority of Americans are going through, and we are going to do something about it. That's why no status quo politician will defeat Donald Trump in November. A young and shinier version of President Biden will lose to Donald Trump. We need to present a vision for the United States as filled with hope as his is filled with grievance. And we can only do that by reclaiming the traditional Democratic advocacy for the working people of the United States. A Democratic Party that claims to serve the working people of this country – yet remains so obviously tied to oligarchs who even now think it's their right to "decide" who we should run in 2024 – is a party that has lost its moral authority and thus its sway with the American people.
Franklin Roosevelt had no patience with what he called the "economic royalists" of his time. I have no patience for them either.
Please give generously to our campaign. We need to do what's needed to convince enough delegates to the Democratic convention that ours is the candidacy to defeat Donald Trump.
