Dear Sharra, Earlier this week, I spoke to my friend Dr. Gabor Maté about my Healing Root Causes program for Individual & Collective Repair. Our talk focused on the stress, trauma, depression, and other mental ailments that so many Americans face.
While we are generally told that our personal troubles are just that – personal – and that mental ailments are only caused by our individual brain chemistry, this ignores the way in which public issues ARE THE CAUSE OF these personal troubles.
People are not only stressed because of their brain chemistry. They are stressed because they are working long hours and yet can barely afford rent and healthcare. These problems require political solutions – from social housing to universal healthcare – to heal the root causes of suffering.
In our talk, Dr. Maté mentioned a profound quote: politics is nothing else but medicine on a large scale. But right now, our politics is failing at this task.
I have often said that we don't have a healthcare system in the United States: we have a sickness care system. Our policies make our citizens sick at rates far above other wealthy democracies and then we treat their symptoms while doing nothing to prevent them from getting sick in the first place.
My Healing Root Causes plan includes several facets to address this, from Preventative Health Care Focused on Cultivating Wellness to Robust Mental Health Support, from Whole Person Educational Systems Focused on Social & Emotional Learning to Safe and Nurturing Communities & Families, from Healing-Focused Justice Systems to International Peacebuilding.
Please give what you can to support our campaign so we can heal the root causes of the widespread physical and mental sickness that plagues our society.
