Dear Sharra,
I want to write to you about the urgency of this moment.
We are living simultaneously in a world where one established order is unraveling in front of our eyes, and another world is struggling to be born. From Republicans unable to even elect a new Speaker of the House, to a potentially catastrophic situation in Israel and Gaza, to a near ubiquitous level of economic anxiety and despair here in America, the pillars of an established order are literally crumbling before our eyes.
Clearly this is the end of one established era, and what begins now is completely up to us. What will not work, is holding on to what was. What will not work, is repeating the same old mistakes. What will not work, is trying to keep the lid on all the cries for change that are emanating from seemingly everywhere.
Things are going to break one way or the other, and if I am President they will break in the direction of greater democracy and justice. Otherwise, they could break in the direction of dystopia, chaos and even fascism in America. The Democrats must defeat fascism in 2024, and I am the best candidate to do it because I am offering people so much more.
We must provide a valve through which people's cries for change are listened to, honored, and directed in a positive way. The profound corruption that has marked the last 50 years of American politics must end.
That is why this campaign matters.
Like Roosevelt when he said it had become clear to him that "we must become fairly radical for a generation," we also must become radical – radical for love, for decency, for democracy, and for justice.
