Most of the campaign for DNC Chair has been about restructuring the organization.
Must we be a 365-day-a year campaign? Yes. Must we approach city and state elections with as much support and enthusiasm as we do a presidential campaign? Yes. Do we need to give far more decision-making power and resources to the states? Yes. Do we need to be a far less opaque, top down organization? Yes.
All that is true.
But in and of themselves, none of those things are enough to create political magic. We need to provide excitement, vision, and inspiration to the American people.
That’s why I’m running.
As a speaker, non-denominational minister, non-profit founder, and author, I have a proven track record of successfully communicating ideas and motivating people to action. Such skills are as important as any other now needed to resurrect our party.
We need to be the public face of the Democratic Party, and that’s an essential role of the DNC Chair. When Democrats have the White House, House or Senate, the DNC must be a megaphone. And I've been a megaphone for great ideas for the last forty years.
Traveling the country extensively for the last forty years of my career, I’ve had up-close-and-personal experiences of the American public that inform my understanding. The Democratic Party’s disconnection from the psychological and emotional make-up of the American people is a significant problem for the party, but not for me. We will regain our political power by repairing our relationship with the American people.
We need more than political car mechanics; we need someone to drive us onto a different road. My forty year career has provided me with the skills, expertise, and heart with which to do it.
If given the chance, I will.
